Preserving a Historic La Jolla gem | Since 2010

Created by locals over a decade ago, Friends of Coast Walk Trail is a nonprofit organization solely operated and funded by community donations to restore and preserve the 0.6 mile trail along the bluffs of La Jolla coastline. Originally intended to be used as a road in the 1920s, Coast Walk Trail is deemed a “paper” street that is managed by San Diego’s Transportation Department. Designated as a historic asset in 1990, Coast Walk Trail is believed to have been used for over 9,000 years, collecting countless notable events throughout its presence. 2025 CRITICAL TRAIL RESTORATION MILESTONE: REPAIRING COAST WALK BRIDGE

One of our biggest priorities for 2025 is the much-needed repair of the Coast Walk Bridge—a beloved landmark that connects people to nature and history. We are thrilled to report that final permitting is in progress, and work is scheduled to begin this Spring!

A special thank you to the City of San Diego, which has supported our efforts along the way and this year was no exception. After several discussions, the city finally agreed to waive the permit and bonding fees for this now shovel ready project.  Big hugs and thanks to Sherry Ahern and her La Jolla Art & Wine team, whose incredible efforts and energy at the Cocktails on Coast Walk fundraiser—with her colleague and professional auctioneer Chris Aslanian and a big music assist by Tad Sisler of the Manhattan of La Jolla all helped raise $20,000 for the bridge project!

As always, we are not able to pull off this event without the commitment and support from our event sponsors: La Jolla.ca THE premier social media and online news source for La Jolla and Retired Judge Jonathan Colby for his on-going support of the trail restoration.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We are $40,000 away from fully funding the $80,000 bridge repair. If you’ve ever walked this trail, admired its beauty, or simply believe in preserving our local treasures, now is the time to help by:

HISTORY
Getting to Know the Historic Coast Walk Trail

Coast Walk is a small but exceptionally beautiful scenic walk off Torrey Pines Road just to the north of Prospect Street. It’s a fun sandy trek that the entire family will enjoy, but bring sunblock as it can take a while to travel the whole way, especially since there are many great places to stop and play. Look for wildlife along the route including colorful birds, friendly sea lions, and little critters in tide pools.
